So how do you line your kiddos up? Can they talk while lining up? Completely quiet while lining up? Singing while lining up? What are your best strategies?

My kids are in small groups and I number the groups..they always want to be first so I just say, "Let's see which group is ready to go?" and I called the quietest group first...nothing special, but it works...

I do the same. I also call students by color of clothing (which they love), by tables, boys or girls, or kids who were put up on my behavior clip chart. I vary it up but I do not allow chatting because by the time they all are lined up they are not ready at all for the hallway; too busy talking.

kids are free to chat etc. when they line up -then we sing and everyone is ready to leave and off we go. Sometimes we sing in the hall as we go since we are closest to the office and it won't disturb anyone if we are going that way.

Here is the chant I teach my kids:

Here I stand
Here I wait
Till lips are zipped
and line is straight

The kids loved this!!! I didn't make it up, I probably got it from some one on PT but I can't remember who.

I say
1, 2, 3 Eyes on Me
4, 5, 6 Zip Your Lips

Sometimes I sing:
I have a little fishy tail (hands held together behind their backs)
I'm standing straight and tall
My eyes are facing forward
I'm quiet in the hall.

I do not allow them to talk while lining up...it takes too much time to quiet them all. The song is for the times when we forget to line up quiet.
I call students many different ways:
By vowel sound in their name/number of letters in their name
By which row they sit in
By birth month
By color/ shoe laces, etc
