4th graders and farting

My class keeps laughing about when someone farts. I gave up on saying things along the lines up its natural, everyone farts, etc because it did nothing to minimize the farting.

I tried having the students say excuse me and giving the class 2 minutes to get their laughter out before we continue with the lesson but that hasn't worked either. Had students right science based reports on farting too and explained each time in scientific terms how and why people fart thinking they will glaze over and that hasn't worked either

Any suggestions? Sometimes, it's hard for me to keep a straight face too.

They're 4th grade boys...it is hysterical to them. Even in 2nd grade we go through this. I just acknowledge the fart and move on. I think the kids were surprised the first time I acknowledged it. Now it seems a bit less distracting.

In keeping with this theme....the after lunch ones are deadly! I wonder what some of these kids eat!😂

While it is a natural process, I think it's rude to do so in public unless it absolutely cannot be helped. So I do "fuss" when I walk into a cloud of funk. I remind them that they should do their best not to do so in public or ask to be excused. I don't have the laughing much at all, an occasional smirk and then they see my face and its the end of it.

It's something about 4th grade and farting!

That's brilliant!

I just finished posting on the 3rd grade board about this topic. A poster asked about RT scripts for Christmas. 1956BD posted several links. The 3rd link has an amazing assortment of titles including "The Gas We Pass". I just can't imagine handing that script out to children even though they would think it's great. Times sure have changed!

BTW if you are interested in RT check out that site.

Farewell To Farting Humor/ Get Over It

Read them Walter The Farting Dog. Tell them that this is their last chance to be immature on this topic and laugh out loud. Afterwards they will stifle their giggles when someone passes gas. Explain that it is polite to ignore this when it happens. When you are a mature fourth grade student you let this go. Maybe it will work. Good luck.

Well, I am in 5th grade, and have 3/4 or more boys, so far ting is abundant. Lol. I finally threatened one table that if they don't stop making a big deal out of farting, I would eat lots of beans for dinner and stand by their table and fart all day. That seemed to end it.

Claire-that's hysterical. Today my boys decided that they were going to make farting noises with their armpits. I was not amused. I wasn't amused when the first did it. By the 3rd I was ready to go through the roof.

We also have farting and burping issues. I love the air freshener idea.
