help with ELA practice test answer

hopefully the attachment will be large enough to read....

i'm playing with the practice tests (available to anyone) for our upcoming state test (of course, they've changed the questions from previous practice tests, so i don't "know" all the answers!)

i'm stumped on this one. i don't like the answer choices to replace "idea" with. "thought" is the logical answer (singular noun) but it isn't any more specific.

what would be your choice and why?

thanks!

Personallly, I would choose 'features' and 'functions'. As for reasoning -- it just sounds right to me!

it's pleasing to the ear (alliteration) and it would make sense to talk about the parts of the robot. but it's a leap for a student to make to go from IDEA to features.....

guess this will be one of those examples where i say, choose the best answer as a writer (and don't focus on the crummy options!)

thanks!

I would choose "features" and "functions" as well. Is the question necessarily asking them to find a synonym for "idea" or just what would be a better word? Like you said, "thought" is no more precise than "idea" (I think it's less precise even), so students should know to eliminate that as an answer right away.

"Thought" and "item" should be eliminated as imprecise words.

"Functions" obviously fits with "things it performs" as that is the definition of function, so that eliminates another option to replace "idea."

You're left with "factors," "business," and "features."

"Factors" refers to something that influences an outcome, so it doesn't fit the meaning of the sentence without also adding other words. "Business" relates to the idea of trade or commerce, so it also doesn't fit the sentence.

"Features" both fits the sentence and is more precise than "idea," so it is the best answer.

I also picked functions and features.
But that takes some rereading and replacing the words and meaning behind the sentence.

My 4th graders would probably choose thought since so often we talk about using synonyms to replace words!

I would choose functions and features because they go along with the context of the sentence.

I could totally see students putting "thought" there because it would replace "idea" in different context.

This is frustrating to me (not you - the whole testing process), because I went through the same thing with our 3rd grade practice test. If adults have to question the answers, you know our students are going to struggle.

Features and functions are more precise.

I agree with the crowd. Features and functions are more precise and are words that would be used to describe robots.
