Exit Criteria

Hello everyone!

I'm a new Title I teacher at the high school level. We are just developing our Title I Reading program.

What do you use as your exit criteria? How do you know when students are no longer Title I?

Thanks!

I would be really interested in finding out how other title teachers decide this as well, but on the elementary level. I always have a waiting list and I am not secure about how I do this. Thanks.

I exit a child based on several criteria.
SORT testing & other informal assestments --running records
DIBELS testing
Progress monitoring on mid 9 weeks and 9 weeks grade
Their regular ReadingTeacher imput as well as my judgement.

At the elementary level we have used semester grades in the past. Now with RtI and with all the benchmarks we'll use those as well. I would just make sure (at any grade level) you don't dismiss too quickly; a student might be making progress with your assistance but may not yet be able to maintain that status independently. This year we had several first and second graders qualify for Title I math who are doing well in the classroom. Because one of the assessments we used (mCLASS math) was a timed test, many students qualified who otherwise probably would not have. So I think we're going to keep them on our roster in kind of a "consultant" status and offer help as needed. It will certainly be something to think about in the spring when we look at year end assessments.

We use DRA, Star, Fall Ohio Achievement scores (3rd grade) my opinions and classroom teacher's input. Last year I kept students in that were on the bubble of being released because we did not have a wait list of students needing in. We also use GATES at the end of the year to help decide who to keep the following year or new students that need added.

You can release then just because all seems well on assesments. Having that one on one with those kids is essential. I keep one that is borderline as long as I can. I would rather them shoot the moon than have them walk at tight rope and fall. Good teacher judgement is the key.

I am also just starting a Title I Reading program at a high school. I would love to hear from anyone who is also a secondary Title reading teacher. I'm very interested in the materials you use and how you identify your students and keep track of the required documentation. Thanks!
