What do I need to type up?

I'm trying to get all my stuff together so I can go make copies. Can you guys give me an idea of the things I need to get together for the beginning of school?

I've typed up my reading log template, binder explanation, and am working on the explanation of our classroom economy but I don't really know what else to do. I don't want it to be overkill but I don't want to overlook anything either.

Also, I've already set up my website but could really use ideas for links that enhance learning (games, activities, etc). I don't want them to be things that parents have to subscribe to though...just free ones because of the SES in the area. I'd like to have resources for science/social studies, math, and reading. Four or five of each would be fabulous!

Thanks for the reply! I have tons more questions now though.

I've done the class brochure. I just forgot to mention it.

For whatever reason, the principal doesn't want us to make a supply list until pre-planning. I've got a rough idea of what I'll ask for but it hasn't been put together yet. I can do it and edit it as needed once preplanning comes around.

When you say management system, do you mean classroom management? I have that on my website. Should I print a hard copy too? It's pretty detailed.

The parent handbook is put out by the school.

Anything curriculum related I'm kind of stuck on. I don't even have anything yet and probably won't until sometime during preplanning. The P says "it should be here" by then.

Do you have any suggestions about the others though?
Do you have a template you use for parent/student info?
What do you put in the end of first week letter?

What type of beginning assessments do you use? They have benchmark testing here but I'm not sure if my school will be using it or not. I haven't been told much at all.

Sorry for all the questions!

Have you tried asking other teachers at your school or grade level team members (if there are any)? They would probably be able to tell you best, given your specific circumstances.

Also, do you have anything that you're planning to give to parents to get their feedback on their child? I send home a questionnaire at the begininning of the year to get some info. about past school experiences, needs, etc.
Do you have a plan for any "get to know you" activities for the first week that you could go ahead and copy?

Unless you are certain that everyone can get to your website regularly, I would send home your management practices the first week. I would abbreviate and give what the parents need to know.

In my first week letter I highlight all of the week's accomplishments and reiterate my enthusiasm for the upcoming year and their continued support. I also include how they can help their child and our class in the year to come.

It sounds like you are new to the school and will have more info after you have met with your colleagues. If you can gt in touch with someone before then it will probably ease your mind to have some of the nuts and bolts answered.

Sounds like you are preparing for a very successful year.

Roo...this will be the first year that my school has had elementary levels. All of the teachers in elem will be new to the school....and to teaching. I think every single one of us is a new teacher. I don't even have contact info for any of them anyway. I'm trying to get in touch with a friend of my mom's who has taught for over 20 years to get help for the first week or so. I want to do getting to know you activities that they will like but haven't figured it out yet.

Do you mind sharing your questionnaire with me? I have one that I was working on but it seems so blah.

I made a Word Document that I will use to help make our first grade website. I don't know what grade you teach but here it is.

luvmycat: The students are expected to have internet access because it is considered a tech/science focused school. Perhaps I should be less naive and assume that not all students will be in that position though. Thanks for making me think of it. I'll be taking your advice and putting something together here shortly.

I'm still open for suggestions. The more you guys can help me do now, the less I have to stress out about later.

At most schools the nurse will give you this information but not always at the beginning of the year. It sometimes takes them awhile and I like to know before hand if one of my students has any major problems.

Does anyone have a questionnaire for students to fill out? I would like to hear what they think their strengths/weaknesses, etc are.

I especially like the ones in both English and Spanish as there are always those times and then I am stumped.
