I'm thinking about doing a reindeer unit with the kids this year. Has anyone ever done a unit on reindeers? I'm looking for anything really, sites, crafts, lessons. TIA!

Very weird unit to prioritise.....

I think- great to do a few isolated and cute, fun activities for reindeers leading up to Christmas, or Ok as part of a wider Christmas Around the World type of unit, but ask yourself how relevant just reindeers are for the students' everday lives.

In all do respect, I find that there is very little that we teach in school that relates to the children's lives outside of school. So, a reindeer unit can be tied into the state standards and for the children it is exciting and different. My children lead two lives--their school life and their out-of-school life. Perhaps this is not the case in some districts, but it is in ours.
I am in favor of anything that gets them excited and is correlated to the standards.

I agree! You certainly can tie the reindeer in tons of ways into your ELA standards, math, and even social studies and science. There are tons of books about reindeer both fiction and nonfiction. Why not go with the children's excitement for the holidays and learn in a fun way? Please share what you come up with! : )

Relevance of reindeer unit

ELA- use any fiction or non-fiction book to teach comprehension skill. Jan Brett has a book about Christmas Reindeer. You could compare and contrast fictional/real reindeer, cover main idea/detail, text to world connections

Science- mammals, seasons, winter animal needs, weather

Social Science- landforms, continents, north/south/east/west, how people in different parts of the world live due to climate

Math- measurement (compare height of reindeer to other deer-like animals, compare length of antlers, animals that are bigger/smaller than reindeer), solve word problems using reindeer

Writing- If I had a pet reindeer... How to take care of a reindeer... I learned that reindeer...

Hmmm.... seems pretty relevant to me.

Thanks for tying it all together for us. I am seeing this as part of a larger unit on the Arctic which we can resume after the winter break.

Thank you for all the great ideas. I'm going to be doing a reindeer unit before the holidays so these activities will definitely be used. The kids love this unit.
