Has anyone ever given up an undesirable position and substituted to get a job in the area or grade you wanted? If so, was it a positive or negative outcome?

I sort of did something like that. Unfortunately it took 3 years of subbing before I got something permanent again, and the subbing did not lead to a job in those districts.

What is undesirable position?

It depends how undesirable it is. I would suggest if it is at least doable for a year - I would stick it out and see if you can transfer or get a job where you want.
In this teacher job market I would NOT leave a job to sub in hopes of getting a job.
That is my opinion. Only you know what you can handle and if you really think it is not going to work out for even a year - than you should probably leave. Just know that it is a tough market in most districts.

Well it's 90 minutes away from my house so I would be staying with family during the week without my husband. I commuted last year and it was just too much.

If it were my decision, and I had to be away from my husband all week, I would quit. IMO, marriage relationship trumps job.

I couldn't agree more... Except my husband went back to school and my job pays the bills. I am beside myself over this.

I don't know all the details to your story, but I stayed at my undesirable position.

(I'll try to be vague due to confidentiality)

It was a regular ed (self-contained) lower elem. position with more than a handful of documented students with adhd, oppositional defiant, and/or aspergers ...autism.

I gained 10 pounds and went to the psychiatrist for meds. ...

This year, I teach the gifted and talented students in the same building!!!!

I am so happy that I didn't quit because I love my job now.
But I did learn a lot in that year from H. E. double hockey sticks.

In my case, I know that assignments get changed every year and that the P. is pretty reasonable with the staffs preference for positions.

If you see that the undesirable position will lead to no future positive positions in that campus then sub! But if there is a chance to get another grade level or transfer then try to stick it out.

Thanks for sharing your story. I want to work closer to where I live and have no desire to move closer to where I work now. The location is just not where I want to be. I'm just afraid that if I give up my job to substitute in a closer area, years will go by before I get something permanent again.

It can be done.
My dh was unemployed for a couple years. He was offered a job with the federal government but it was in another state 6 and a half hours from home! He took the job knowing that it was only to keep the kids fed while he found something else. He was there for a year then able to transfer to an office about 30 minutes from our home.
It was a really tough year, i won't lie. He came home every weekend even through snowstorms. It was something that we HAD to do.
Good luck with your decision.

I appreciate you taking the time to give me some encouragement. I'm glad to hear it worked out with your husband finding a closer job. That year must have really been rough.
