I posted on the Primary board and haven't heard anything, so thought I'd ask here.

My first day of school will not be my students first day. I anticipate that I will return to school in another week or so. I've been out on Workers Comp so I missed the first day of school. By the time I return, they will be well into their routines and academics. Does anyone have any fun "getting to know you" activities that we can do that won't disrupt (too much) the academic routines already under way? I teach first grade so they had a sub and my coteacher the past couple of weeks. I gave all my "activities" to them to use!!! Thanks!

asking their neighbor a specific question such as what is your favorite ice cream?, then sharing out? I have done a Me Bag where they share three to five things from home that was fun!

Maybe...

*Read "First Day Jitters," and talk about your feelings anticipating your return.
*Scholastic has an "All About Me" booklet template on their blog.
*Name poems (I've done this with older students)
*I also like the "Me Bag" activity mentioned above. My students really enjoyed sharing theirs.

***Best wishes for a great year in grade one!***

I just went through this. I was out because I was recuperating from knee surgery.

I didn't do any "get to know you" exercises. I just started the day like I normally would but often asked students how they had been doing such and such with the sub. We had a wonderful first week. My sub was awesome and worked through curriculum like a champ.

I wish you a wonderful first day and week! You'll feel out of step at first but you'll get into the routine in no time.

I have used First Day Jitters and Me Bag in 4th and very successful. Kids love both. Could you play on the fact you have been out and ask the kids to share some "rule / procedure" you should know for their classroom?
