Kahoot! Hack

So I had an interesting day back from winter break. When we left, we were smack dab in the middle of the Ancient Rome unit. I figured on the first day back, it would be a good idea to review what we have learned before with a class Kahoot!

My first class of the day, several kids had trouble getting into the game and the game gains 75 participants. Figuring it was just a glitch, I gave the students that couldn’t get in white boards to participate and moved on. Later on in the day, I found out that a student had hacked the Kahoot game with an app. I called him into my room with his computer during study hall and checked his web history. Sure enough, he was the one that hacked it. I ended up giving him a detention and contacting his mother.

I was just wondering, has anybody experienced this?!

My cousin is in high school. He posted his Kahoot code on a Facebook group, and over 500 people joined.

Yes, I have. I just shut the game down and started over, with a warning that if it happened again, the culprit would get lunch detention.

Does your school have any sort of policy for dealing with misuse of technology?

Detention not enough

In our district, that would get the kid "white-listed". In other words, no Chromebook for a set amount of time. All work would be done on paper. Since all students use Chromebooks almost exclusively for textbooks, assignments, etc., it would be a huge problem. We've had a couple of students who were banned for the year. AND one got in-school detention for 10 days.

A colleague was complaining before the break about Kahoot! hacks.

We had an issue a few years ago with a senior student who figured out how to hack our school's educational platform (i.e. the program used for messaging, posting daily work, recording grades, etc.) and get into areas he shouldn't have been able to access. His father thought his suspension was "excessive" and that it partly was the school's and/or the software designer's fault for making the platform too lax on security and too easy to hack. He even tried arguing that Junior had done the school a favor by pointing out some of the security holes so they could be patched. This, apparently, is a common argument many malicious hackers make; they claim they are performing a public service because they're not actually stealing anything and they're just doing it for fun.

Many of us thought it should have been expulsion rather than suspension, since the student was willfully invading the privacy of others and compromising the grading. Obviously, this was a more serious matter than hacking Kahoot!, but it speaks to the bigger problem of some kids (and apparently grownups) thinking hacking is a just a big laugh and not serious.

The long and short of it is that I don't trust the security of any digital platform. We were assured when we were forced to do all our grade reporting online that it was totally safe and secure to do so. It was not.

Wow, I feel like I should have punished him even more now! I work at a small school, so admin and tech people already knew about it before i could even tell them He’s a wrestler, and the wrestling coaches made him bear crawl for 45 min straight and gave him a talking to as well, so I think he’s learned his lesson!

Bmcgee81, If you google “kahoot hack” it’s the first link to come up! It’s a chrome extension that they have to download on their chrome books!

We use macs and Chrome is blocked from the kid's computers. All they can use is Safari and Firefox.

I may be a bit harsh, but threaten legal action as it is "technically" illegal to do. I have never heard of Kahoot.....
