Splitting the class...again.

One of our grade-level teachers is out. Again. No sub. Principal is out, Instrucitonal Coach is out, Behavior Specialist is out. Which means no extra bodies to cover the class. So it will be split. Again. We get compensated for it around $100 for the day. But I have a tough class to begin with, and throwing in 10 extra kids is exhausting. Not to mention that the classroom teacher is pretty lax on classroom management, so the kids are used to getting away with everything.
Digging deep to find the patience I need today.

I can't believe you get compensated for it! We have to split classes a lot due to sub shortages and there is no extra pay.

At least you get paid. I am a sub who has had that happen many times, plus 2 yard duties. The teacher I’m covering and the teacher who had no sub. The regular teacher who got the other 1/2 of the class got paid extra. Not even a dang thanks at the end of the day from the front office.

We get compensated if we miss our planning period, too. But it's not worth it to me.

I had never heard of splitting classes until reading about it here.

At my previous school, it was a rare day that we didn't have at least one class split. Often three or four. There are no casual teachers (subs) in this town. My current school does a little better, which is good, as it's very small, and if you split one class across the three remaining classes, everyone gets 10 extra bodies, which is never workable.

What do you do if you have a teacher out, no sub, and no extra bodies to cover the class?
Because we're in that situation often. For whatever reason, our district is very short on subs. If a teacher has a planned absence, sometimes the job will get filled. Sometimes it's cancelled at the last minute, which means it won't get picked up.
If a teacher is out with little noticed, there's very little chance the job will get filled.
We have no choice but to split the class.

I'd never heard of splitting classes until reading about it here. If a teacher is out, and there is no sub, another staff person covers the class. It might be an instructional assistant, the reading specialist, the staff development teacher, the assistant principal, or the principal. No teacher should have to absorb ten extra students.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

Everyone who could possibly cover the class was out. We had no one to cover. Literally no one.

We have not split classes, either. We pull EA's from kinder, or 2nd choice Sped. Sometimes EA's rotate through the uncovered class (not optimal - but better than splitting). If our p was in meetings, she would cancel and come back to cover. Our office staff has covered classes when needed.

We have been really short subbed this year due to a new policy that limits the number of days retired teachers can sub. Fortunately we have figured out how to survive.

I would hate splitting classes. As a specials' teacher, I might not even have space and equipment to cover the class if they came to me.

Every instructional assistant as well as the principal and assistant principal were out? That's awful for you.

WE also get aid per our contract...but you get more than I do Also our admin and/or specialists NEVER fill in if we are short a sub. No sub is just a guarantee that classes will be split as no one else every fills the need.

I hate it and nobody learns that day, there arent even places for everyone to sit and several kids have to sit on the floor for the day. If that ever happened when my son was in school-relegated to the floor and losing a days learning I would have been livid but we deal with all the time.

That stinks, I hope your day went ok. We were lucky and rarely had to split classes like that (but when we did, no compensation... no compensation for missing planning for meetings, either, but planning only took place after school so it wasn't like we needed that to prepare for the same day). The few times I had to have extra kids, they were always from a different grade level since we had <1-1 teacher per grade level (a few of us had a split level classroom). It's tough to get everyone engaged and productive.

I feel your pain. We get split classes often, at least a few times a month. We also get compensated for it but it's not worth the money. I also get around 10 extra kids. I hate when it's a bilingual class because those kids can't understand me and it's just worse. I don't know about you, but I'm always tempted to take a mental health day the day following me getting a split class. I never do but I'm tempted.
