I expected this but I am surprised they announced it so early.

of the length of time required for prep work. Sad but wise decision I think.

Big event cancellations

Yesterday (or the day before?) Philadelphia canceled two very big events, their Thanksgiving Day parade and the Mummers Parade, which is held on January 1st. They decided that there will be no big events in the city through February 2021. That sure seems a long way away from now and makes me feel pretty bleak about the future.

Some changes hit me harder than others. The Rose Parade always goes on, so its cancellation stunned me. But the one that made me understand the true breadth of this crisis was the cancellation of the Olympics.

I'm sure the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade isn't too far behind

I realize that it needed to be done, but it really hits home when they cancel things months in advance. We were fortunate to see the Rose Bowl parade in person a few years ago. It is always good when viewed on tv, but in person it was fantastic.

I'm with Amiga on this one.

Being that New Year's Day is 'off in the future' I didn't want to believe we MIGHT STILL be self-isolating by then. It didn't occur to me that we might not be able to visit and celebrate the holidays with family and friends! I'm just realizing, right now, that I had sort of told myself that I can deal with skipping all the holidays and birthdays through the year until about Christmas which has always been our family's 'must do' event.

Now I'm feeling a bit stunned, too...

As 1956 said, I think probably a major part of the decision was the amount of time it takes to put together a float, not just the week before the parade but for months ahead of time. My university always had a float in the parade and the work for the next year's float started almost as soon as the parade was over. And much of that work has to be done with people working together in person.

So while it's entirely possible that our regular holiday plans may need to be modified, the Rose Parade is a casualty of what is happening right now.

I understand why they cancelled it, but it still makes me sad. I am really going to miss all of the usual events and traditions this year that we've always taken for granted.
