Never never ever put a rubber-backed rug in your washing machine.

I had some basement drain back-up issues on Friday. You'll thank me for not posting on Photo Friday. I had a 2'x4' rug that got some of the sludge on the end of it. In retrospect, I should have put it outside to dry and then thrown it away. I wasn't thinking and threw it into my front-loading washing machine. That rug was at least 9 years old. Well, the dried rubber backing has pulverized and totally clogged somewhere inside the washer. I've pulled the filter and manually drained and let the stuff dry to vacuum out. I've tried running just the Clean Washer cycle and it gets to a point when it should drain and will stop with the error code that it cannot drain. Might be time for a new washer.

I would never have thought of that

Now I just hope I remember! Thanks for the cautionary tale.

Wow. I'm sorry that happened! I've washed rubber backed rugs many times, but I guess I'll stop that!

I made the same mistake a few years ago. We had to call a plumber and get our draining hose pumped because it was so clogged. Our washer was okay but it was the hose that drains it into the sewer or wherever used washing water goes

I hope you get it figured out soon! I changed all our bath rugs to some that are made out of towel material with no rubber backs.

Oh, that stinks. I hope you can get it fixed with a plumber and not have to go through the expensive of a new washer.

That's scary! Growing up we had rugs in our bathroom like that and washed them every 2 weeks. I'm sure my parents still do. As an adult I've washed mine occasionally but nowhere near that often. When I moved I got one that doesn't have the rubber backing and I was actually just thinking that I should switch to a nicer one that has the backing on it. How do you wash it if you don't put in the washer? Try to hand wash in the sink? That just seems like it wouldn't really get it very clean.

I use a small, spot steam cleaner to clean my area rugs

I would love to purchase a ruggable, they’re completely washable. But, they’re out of my budget!

I hadn't considered that the problem was outside the washer.

I almost threw my rug into the washer yesterday. My DH talked me out of it good thing I listened.
