Teaching strategies for teaching numbers 1-30. Just recognizing in and out of order. Being able to count on from a number within 30.

Please no fine motor suggestions as the child as difficulty with fine motor (so no tracing, coloring, using clothes pins). When presented with fine motor, the child loses focus and doesn't want to try.

Also, the child gets easily overwhelmed by screens and videos

Songs! Music and movement while learning is so important to littles. Heidisongs has songs for each number to thirty. I'm sure there are others for free in YouTube as well.

Split it up. The teens are the hardest set of numbers for young children, and take the longest to learn (because they don't make any sense). Start with 1-5, then 1-10, then add the teens. Usually once they get the teens, the higher numbers come much quicker.

Do lots and lots of counting with objects. Setting the table and counting the silverware, sorting socks and counting them out, counting legos and blocks and toys while building and playing.

Matching activities with numerals and sets of objects. Take cards and mix them up and have them put them back in order. Again, start with just a few until that is automatic, then add larger numbers. Write the numbers in chalk on the driveway and have them jump to them in order. Number toy cars and draw different parking lots for them to park in (number order, sets, out of order, etc).

We do lots of flash and show. Flash a numeral or a tens frame or a random set and have them recreate it somehow (on fingers, with a white board, with cubes on a tens frame). My kids love when I try to "trick" them by flashing the number really fast.

Make a number line and use it for jumping, hopping, etc. Start at a number in the middle and jump and count to the end. Draw a card and stand on that number.

First person says one, next person says two, and continue until you reach the desired number. This is called count around. This can also be done by beginning with six and counting up, or beginning at a certain number and counting back.

Start counting at any desired number. Child does not always need to begin counting at one. Count up and use cards placed on a table top with the numbers written on them and have child point to the card as well as say the number. Turn over one of the cards. Count again. Continue until all the cards are face down. When secure (may be days or weeks), count back beginning at a desired number using the same procedure.

Use flash cards to the desired number. Mix up the cards and have child place in the correct order. Be sure the cards are on the same color cardstock.

I agree with working on one to five and then one to ten. Once to ten, eleven and twelve always take awhile. Once child gets to thirteen, the teens seem to go smoothly. Watch out, because twelve and twenty-one often give young children a problem.

Counting together while swinging was a favorite for my grandson. Also the series “number blocks” (Netflix or amazon?) is fun and catchy.

You can play "garbage" with any 10 consecutive numbers, or skip counting patterns.
You will need 4 of each number card.
Each player lays out 10 cards, face down in a 10 frame style.
The rest of the cards get put in a draw pile.
First person picks a card from the draw pile and places it in the appropriate spot on the ten frame. E.g., if you were playing with numbers 1 - 10 and you picked up a 4, you would trade it for the 4th spot on the ten frame.
Then you take that card and place it in the correct number position of the ten frame. Continue until you can no longer place the card you turned up.
Then the other player has a turn. This continues until 1 player has all cards face up in the correct order.
