Title 1/RTI teachers,
When do you "close your class lists" for new students for interventions? We have 31 days left with the students, at least 5 of which will be taken up with end of the year testing. We had a substitute teacher approach us about taking a new student on today...today.

I guess my best advice depends on how you view the situation...

Can you give the student any benefit from even 1 day with you? YES....

How much more paperwork/class management-rearranging for you will it be?

Is it important enough for you to keep this teacher on your side?

I absolutely hate the idea of it all, myself. But it is the student in the end that will benefit or lose...

There are teachers out there that have no idea what we as Title/RTI teachers do and it makes me so mad I could scream ( chose better words than I really wanted to write.) I was regular ed for 20 years but I never treated others the way I am treated at times now that I am a specialist.

I don't know that I would just 'roll' over for the teacher asking this but let her know what an inconvenience it is, in a very tactful way. If possible, keep the student in mind.

Just my thoughts...we have no set cut off date. Good luck.

LaVerne did an excellent job of verbalizing what would be going through my head. One more consideration that came to my mind: How much below grade level is the child reading? I serve only 3rd graders, and if he's reading at mid-2nd grade I would feel differently about adding him than if he were reading at mid-3rd grade.

We have 35 student days left, and several move-ins lately, and 5 days of state testing coming up. If the teachers get me the test that shows below grade level, I would add them.

LaVerne and Mrs. M. both made valid suggestions. Sometimes, when it's this close to the end, I take them if I have room in a group to satisfy the teacher but I don't technically enroll them in Title I. Between now and the end of the year, classroom teachers will undoubtedly find reasons to cancel RTI/TITLE or small reading groups with or w/out letting us know.

Do what is best for the student...and if you can, do whatever it takes to keep peace at the end of the year. I'm still wondering, though, why a sub would be asking....

The child is a kindergartner, moved in to avoid being retained elsewhere. We took him into Title. I just was wondering what other schools do with this late of a move in.
The sub is a long term sub.

Hi, I have a different perspective in that the school was late to get me in to offer Title 1 services. I am not sure what the hold up was, but I am in my third week... and a majority of that has been waiting for the ONLY person in the district to give me any kind of guidelines to follow... like caseload, etc. I am the only Title 1 teacher and I am brand new to Title 1, so it is very slow going. What really annoys me is that even though they were so late in hiring me, I am still expected to screen the students prior to assisting them. I had hoped that I could work from teacher recommendations and previous standardized test scores, plus the regular Title 1 eligibility criteria.
I don't know when I will be able to work with students or how much I will be able to help them. But, I will try to help as many kids as I can in the time that I have. I think it will come down to sticking to the Title 1 rules as closley as possible, because I am only part time and it is so late in the year.

I'm a title 1 math teacher and we just remade our groups for third and fourth grades.. We are currently finishing up our last round of state testing this week so it has been hard to see groups. We also only have a few weeks of school left, but we figured that we would try to include as many as we could even though we won't see as much growth as we'd like.

I stop adding students to my groups around mid April. After that there just isnt enough time before our year ends to make a difference.
