I am looking for a different gift idea for a baby gift..everyone gives clothes that the kid hardly ever wears. I really want to get something different and meaningful. Thanks

If you have time order the book On The Day You Were Born: A Photo Journal by Debra Frasier. It is really cool.... Take a look on-line. I have one for one of my daughters and I have given it as a gift. Pretty neat keepsake.

I received a basket with supplies...like diapers, wipes, rash cream, bibs, receiving blankets etc. That was a very thoughtful and useful gift.

Are you crafty at all? I have made a cute tin to go in baby's room. At scrapbooking stores, they sell empty paint tins, you cover them with cute scrapbooking paper, add ribbons tied onto the handle and it is done!

My sister in law gave my daughter a framed artsy picture of a Paris when Amy was a baby...she wrote on the back about may all of your dreams come true...and it has displayed in the room for 18 years, and at Amy's graduation, my sister in law snuck into the room and wrote a longer message about how proud she is of her etc, then laid it on her bed for her to see after the party....Amy LOVED it...even took it with her to her college dorm, and now her sorority house...

and yes, Amy has been to Paris now...and is majoring in hospitality management/event coordination/and travel...

How about a monogramed market basket in the colors chosen for the baby's room. You could also put some of your favorite books in it for different age levels, and maybe a note why you like that book, or why it is special to you.

Not sure how well you know the mom to be but my best friend made me a little bag of my favorite toiletries to take to the hospital. I loved it and it was so useful and practical. It made packing for the hospital so much easier. She included things like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, pony tail holders, deodorant, face wipes, chap stick and even mints and chocolate. She also put together a mini-diaper bag that was meant to be left in the car for the baby for either quick trips or for things you might forget to pack. It included diapers, wipes, an outfit, receiving blanket and toy.

My other best friend made us an adorable motorcycle out of diapers. It was so cute!

I am sure if you look on pinterest there is lots of great ideas!

If there's a registry, see if she has a diaper bag. Fill the diaper bag for the mom with all necessary items.

Other ideas...
*Gift certificate to a local photographer so that she can get Baby's photos taken
*Hand knit blanket or quilt (My aunt made us a beautiful afghan in the nursery colors.)
*Anything monogrammed
*Date night gift cards for Mom & Dad
*Baby's 1st Christmas ornament

One cool gift that I just got at my shower was a set of books that I can put family pictures into for the baby. There's one titled My Vacation, My Family, My Baby Book, and another one about grandma. I'm looking forward to adding the pictures and reading them with Baby!

the best gift

I got was a hooded towel made from a wash cloth and a regular sized towel. It was so much better than the little skimpy things made for babies. I got a set of 2 towels and 20 thin washcloths. The kind that come in packs of 10 NOT baby washcloths that repel water. I used those things for everything - especially when they started regular food. If they were completely disgusting I didn't feel bad about pitching them.

Another thing I never had enough of was diaper service diapers. I liked those better than birdseye. They made the best burp cloths. My sister used chunky stamps and fabric paint and decorated a package. Always got compliments.

At the baby shower for Boy, there were Zero toys. Now, I always give toys for 3-6 months and the moms are always appreciative. I also sometimes give books but mostly toys.

I love to give Barefoot Dream Blankies. They are just the right size for "lovies" and are sooooo soft! They come in awesome colors and patterns. My grandbabies had 4 or 5 each so my daughter was able to wash them daily and there was always a clean one for her girls to carry around

How about a music box? I gave one to each of my nieces & nephew when they were born. This was a special gift that no one else even thought of. There are so many different kinds, but my favorites were of the Beatrix Potter characters.

I always make a diaper cake. On each layer I put a small gift (rattle, socks, thermometer, book, gas drops, etc). They are super easy to make and are always a hit!

Two ideas

I usually buy a personalized frame from personalizationmall.com. It has the baby's name, birth date, weight, etc. Really adorable!

At my baby shower, my mom and sister presented me with a scrapbook they had been putting together behind my back! It had pages made by many of my friends and family members. All I had to do was add the pictures! The best gift ever!!

You got lots of great meaningful ideas already! I went through my Pinterest page and looked up a few more in case you would like to give something that is a bit crafty. In most cases, I was able to track down the actual site the idea originated from, but for the last few, they weren't available or hard to find, so I left a link to the photo in case you can figure out how to put it together if you decide to go with any of them.

Baby gift

When my first daughter was born, I recieved a beautiful frilly baby head band for her. With it was a lovely note suggesting I have her wear it for her first professional portrait, and then put it away and save it for her to wear as a wedding garter (her something old) I LOVED that idea and ever since, I've given a fancy headband to everyone having a baby girl, with a similiar note. We might sew some extra lace on it when she gets married, but if not, it is still elaborate and beautiful. I also like to give magazine subscriptions and children's books.

I'm late here...but on Etsy they have the little stickers that you can put on a shirt or onesie to take monthly photos. They say 1 month old, 2 months old, etc. I received so many beautiful outfits but some I only put on the baby once! Now, I have been giving cds as gifts. Land of Nod has some really great ones. My daughter and I have listened to them since she received them as a gifts when she was born and now they are great in the car too.
