New kitchen

Because of COVID19, my husband was furloughed. Because he was furloughed, he decided to take on a kitchen remodel. This is 100% DIY, mostly him. I helped, my daughter came down and spent some time with us to help. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

It was definitely

a labor of love. My husband and daughter had to assemble all the cabinets from flat packs and add a spacer at the top so they could put in that little bit of crown molding. They had to move over the range vent, replace the tile under the range (because I wanted everything moved over 3 inches to fit in a lazy susan corner cabinet) He also replaced every outlet (14 of them) to go better with the backsplash and update the look. Two of those outlets have USB plugs in them as well. He installed new plumbing for the new sink, as well as the new range and new refrigerator, too. He also had to figure out how to tilt out the faux drawer in the sink, because I wanted it that way.

I'm good at ordering stuff. And holding stuff. And I painted.

Did you all refinish your countertop yourselves, or did you order it new? I've seen some countertops refinished and we're trying to determine how hard it would be.

It looks beautiful! After reading your last post I am even more impressed. As a few others have said, this would never be possible in my house. I especially like how your floor works so well with the new kitchen.

Countertops

The original counter tops were builder-grade formica, with the curved backspash. I wanted black quartz countertops. But I also wanted a new stove and microwave. So in order to get a new stove, I went with IKEA black formica counter tops, which cost us only $200, vs. $2000 or more. They also look more like quartz, because they're just flat and about 1.3 inches thick.

P.S. When we toured the house 20 years ago, I said I wanted those countertops replaced. This month is the 20 year anniversary of moving into our house.

The cabinets

came from Carolina Cabinet Warehouse. I bought them online. They are all made of cabinet grade plywood, and have those cool soft-close hinges and drawers. I'm so thrilled with them.

Home Depot's cabinet sides and backs are made of particle board with a paper laminate covering. I think my last ones were Home Depot type cabinets.

What a beautiful kitchen you now have! I love the cabinets! I need to see more of the backsplash, do you have a picture that shows it more? How do you like the additional drawers by your dishwasher?

It is a thrill to get a remodeled kitchen. I think your countertops look beautiful, and it sounds like a good trade for a new stove/microwave.

Enjoy! And thanks for sharing with us. I love remodeling stories and pictures!

It looks great, and I love black (ish) countertops with white cabinetry. That's what I went to when I redid the kitchen in Georgia. We sold that house to a flipper, and I noticed on the pictures of the finished product that was posted by the realty company he used that he kept the same color scheme and painted the walls grayish. It's a color scheme that lends itself well to adding color through the use of decorations.

upgrade. I love the way it all blends together. I am glad you checked out what the Home Depot cabinets were made out of before you purchased them. No many customers are that smart. It is well worth going with better made items.
Hope it lasts another 20 years, like your old kitchen did!
