Game: What was the number one song on your first day of the grade you teach?

My example: I am teaching sixth next year. I started sixth grade in 2005, so I went to the Billboard Hot 100 list for 2005 on Wikipedia and looked for August. Mine is We Belong Together by Mariah Carey.

If you teach multiple grades: Pick the song for the grade you teach the most of. If you have an even spread, pick your favorite from your grades.

You can find yours by replacing the year in this URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ingles_of_2005

Be sure to include your grade!

This is when YOU were a student. Not your first year teaching.

Well, I've been teaching 4th, so in 1980 the two most popular songs in August were "Magic" by Olivia Newton John and "Sailing" by Christopher Cross.

This fall I'll be teaching 5th, so in 1981, the two most popular songs were "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield and "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

Cool trip down memory lane!

I'm retired but I spent the last 15 years teaching Kindergarten. This was the top song in September of 1964: The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals.

I teach K/1 and started kindergarten in 1981. The top song was Physical by Olivia Newton John. My sister had the album and I remember listening to it over and over on her stereo with headphones, singing at the top of my lungs. And I also remember having a whole dance routine for that song.

I teach 4th grade. I was in 4th grade in 1998. August of 1998 the top song was "The boy is mine" by Brandy and Monica. I do know who Brandy and Monica are, but I don't remember the song. September of 1998 was "I don't want to miss a thing" by Aerosmith, which I definitely remember!

This was fun! We should do the same thing for the year we started teaching in a new thread!

My first teaching job: Ghostbusters, 1st grade 1984
My current teaching job:The Boy is Mine, a song I've never heard of, by Brandi and Monica., 6th grade 1998

Edit: I misread the directions! Points off for me.

So, 6th grade for me was 1972, it was either Brandy or Alone Again, Naturally.

well, good grief! who remembers what year they were in a grade?! i'll have to do some math and estimate....

hmmmmmmm....i think we moved here in 1980 for 7th grade, so 1979 for start of 6th grade....

oh, yeaaaahhhhhhh! DISCO, baby! ah, the memories!

"Bad Girls" by Donna Summer

i now teach 5th grade, and that year The Commodores had the number one spot with "Three Times a Lady"

fun fact: both Donna Summer and The Commodores starred in the disco movie Thank God It's Friday--such a fun movie!

I teach 5th and I would have started 5th grade in Sept. 1987. It looks like the number one songs were "La Bamba" and "Who's That Girl" by Madona.

Ahhhhhh the good old 80s. Those were some good times.

Icrazyteach.....We must be the same age because I would have been in kinder in 81 also!

We share the same song, only I was in 5th grade. But that was not really my song, because school was delayed for 2 weeks because of the crops being late, so we started in Sept. I think it was "Sweet Dreams "( not what I was having that week... ) but it could have been "Maniac" , more appropriate in my opinion.

So much fun!

I teach multiple grades, but I have more third graders than the other grades. I started third grade in 1982, when Eye of the Tiger by Survivor was number one. 🐅

I suddenly feel the need for an awesome 80s workout montage.
