A former colleague told me that the current principal instructed her and another teacher that only the principal is allowed to assign detentions...that it was a law...??? Does anyone know where we can read that law? We're in NJ who currently has a bully governor so maybe this is true?

In our district teachers can assign detention, but only principals can assign a suspension.

Thanks for your response. I believe this administrator confused detentions with suspensions.

We can't assign detentions. We fill out a discipline form and our assistant principal assigns the appropriate punishment. This is part of our county's behavior policy.

Our admin encourages us to assign detention as one consequence before a student receives an office referral. The admin can then assign one of their own detentions.
