What are your thoughts on teaching multiplication and division together? I have always taught them separate. But with the new core, I am seeing where they are being taught as fact famillies. I can't decide if it would be more beneficial to teach one at a time or not. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated!!

them the same way you would + &-. I like doing it like fact families, the kids are familiar with it. They understand that it is similar to addition and subtraction. Of course they still need to memorize. That's always the hurdle isn't it?

We're using gomath this year and it's presented separately. I guess you could mention that they're related and I'm sure they've heard the words inverse operation from Add/sub so that would be ok, but the strategies are very different so that would be the reason I'd teach them separately.

Hi! I would also continue to teach them separately. When the students master their multiplication facts, they'll be able to grasp division more easily. That being said, once you introduce division, you can do the fact families to show the relation. It'll make for a smoother transition, and better understanding.

I've always taught them together. The students always seem to get that they are related functions when they are introduced as a new kind of fact family.

I've taught third grade for several years. I always teach the concepts together. I begin by introducing multiplication with circles and stars, and arrays. Then I use The Doorbell Rang to introduce division. Students are given a fact family each night to master. Most students are very successful with this approach.

I have been teaching multiplication for a gazillion years but like to teach division separately. They need to master the multiplication facts before they understand division. I've done both ways but found separating them better.
