New kitty vs. Disney

My parents took in a stray cat in Dec. The cat had kittens in January. During our Easter visit, my 8 y.o. DD fell in love with one of the kittens in particular. Of course she has been begging and pleading that we take it home. We have a goldfish, a dog, and recently purchased 6 chicks to raise for eggs.

After talking with my DH, she offered to pay my DH $25 (the amount she had collected from grandparents and egg hunts) He responded with, "How about skip the Disney trip next year?" She agreed and replied, "Can't you see how badly I want the kitty. I'm willing to give up Disney!" My DD is quite the animal activist and really has a special connect to animals.

After spending the evening explaining what she would miss at Disney and the responsibilities she would have with a new kitten, along with the possibility of feline leukemia and our dog freaking out, she still decided on the kitten!

So, we'll have a new kitten in the family, no Disney trip next December, and a saving of $3000 in trip costs that will be put into our land fund. What a weird Easter we've had!

She's never been to Disney so she doesn't know what she's missing. And as she says, "This is a real life, Mom! A real living thing. Disney will be there in a couple years. We can go then!"

I love her. She is amazing.

What a great family! you are giving up your trip so she can have a kitten. To be honest I don.t think I could make that decision. She is a strong little girl, and a great negotiator. Watch out a pony could be next

Your daughter made the right choice. I would have chosen the cat, too.

Oh, there's been discussion about pygmy goats, hamsters, and lizards. We've made the decision that there are NO more pets for a long time. I hope she stays interested or it will be me raising a cat and 6 chicks!

She was also quite shocked when I told her how much money the Disney trip was going to cost us. We have been saving up to buy land for years so that we have a "get-away" place an hour or two away. We have dreamed of ATVs. She was happy to hear that the $$ we were saving for Disney will be going to the land fund!

I agree that your daughter made the right choice.

(But it might not be a terrible idea to put some of that saved Disney money into a vet fund.)

I agree too!!!

I currently have a friend whose cat had kittens & I have always wanted a calico & 2 of them are calicos!

I have also wanted a golden lab puppy (already potty trained of course).

Even if I COULD afford one of the two, I just lost my baby of 5 years in Sept. & still have 2 cats that are 10 & 11; the 11 year old HATES everyone except me (to me she's miss lovey dovey etc) so I really would feel guilty doing that to her again. She hates the younger one & hated the cat who died...

Sigh, I want one so badly- it would cheer me up!

As much as I love Disney, my kitties bring us DAILY joy and laughter. Enjoy your new addition and cherish that DD of yours. Sounds like a special girl!

What a wonderful DD! Mine would have chosen the kitty, too! You need to give him/her a Disney name. We currently have Oliver (Oliver and Company), Binx (Hocus-Pocus) and Hobbes (not Disney, but it was my DS's favorite cartoon growing up, probably because he was so much like Calvin).

We had considered naming her Disney, but my DD really liked Molly!

Molly is super sweet and having a great time. We are trying to get our dog use to her!
