Got a parent email

Demanding to know why his snowflake is failing...Ummm...He's done no work, though he's got accessibility, I've posted video lessons to explain, recorded read alongs, etc. SO, I told the parent that snowflake needed to do the work as set up in the expectations from the school, I would grade it, his snowflake would essentially be passing. I also told him I'd CC the principal so that she knew there was a conflict in case he wanted to speak with her.

His response?

"I"ll see that he does his work, but we didn't sign on for distance learning."

Ummm...Gov. Abbott shut us down. NONE of us signed up for distance learning, including the staff.

Can't tell if this was a parent just venting or if he thinks that his kid isn't being served appropriately. What I can say is that this isn't the first time this year that snowflake hasn't been passing. I'm just shrugging this one off.

Your email sounds strangly like one I think my coworker got. I've had similar ones. My p told us not to respond to those parents and sent a strongly worded, but professional, email basically saying feel free to withdraw your child. We're a Catholic school.

I love how you shut the parent down by offering to CC the principal. Took the wind out of his sails.

I teach at a private school and after one father got his son's failing grades (same reason as OP's student) he emailed my P and told her that he had serious concerns about the efficiency of online learning for his son and that in exchange for his tuition dollars that he would prefer additional options for his son's education. Seriously??!! Like what??!! Fortunately, P is awesome and told him that getting his son busy and turning his work in would be his best option.

Yeah, It is smart to blow it off. He came in defensive because he knows snowflake is doing nothing.
Then tries to throw the blame elsewhere.
I'd seriously have told him, I didn't sign up for it either!

"We didn't sign up for distance learning."

That really irritates me. I'm sick of entitled parents.

Did you say to him, "We didn't sign on for this either?" I would have no problem saying that to a parent who had the audacity to respond with such an asinine comment.

Maybe I'm just getting pissy as I get older.

Entitled people are everywhere it seems. Since schools are closed and I’m not subbing I’ve increased my hours at my big box home improvement store job. Sometimes I’m assigned phone operator duty and get to talk with the customers who “press 0 to speak with the operator” instead of listening to all the menu options to get to a department.

Some of what I get asked is amazing.

“How long is the line into the store?” Ummm, I don’t know because I’m in a tiny windowless room at the back of the store.

“Can I tell you what I want, you go get it, and bring it out to my car?” Ummm no, we’re not doing phone orders because we don’t have the staff.

“You should have more staff on!” Every one that can work is working.

“Why do you have staff not working?” Because they are at home with their children since they have no one to watch them as their daycare is shut down.

“Why don’t you have more registers open?” (Customer called the store from inside the store while waiting in line) Because of social distancing guidelines every other register is open.

“I had to wait five minutes for someone to answer the phone!” Consider yourself lucky then because some people wait a half an hour or more. How can I help you? “I’m still waiting for 12 feet of crown moulding for my gourmet kitchen.” Oh it looks like your order has been delayed due to the factory shutting down because of covid 19. “Someone needs to call that factory and tell them to make my crown moulding.” Okay, I’ll have someone do that.
