I'm just wondering if anyone belongs to other professional communities as well, specialized for school psych or counseling or social work or whatever else.

I read the NASP forums, but it's very different from here. I never post, I just read the discussions that are very tied into school psychology topics. It's definitely a very professional community in that your real name/location/job title are all published with each post, and it's more like a listserv.

Anyone else?

I only really come to PT. I know that NASP and my state's organization are available to me, but I have just gotten used to the feel of PT and I feel comfortable going to my fellow school psychs for feedback and info.

Maybe if I get my license to work in private practice, I will join one of those organizations.

Do you find NASP more helpful than your state's organization (if your state has one)?

I have asked specific questions on ASCA's page because before when I would address issues on PT I didn't get much feedback. When the group was private, I felt a little "safer" asking for feedback with certain situations. Now that it is an open group I am a little more leary in case someone was to recogninze or figure out who I am. That could get pretty tricky. I tried earlier to get support and was going to update, but feel a troll hijacked the board to stir up controversy. There are a few generic questions I would like to ask about our current situation but am rather gun shy right now.

I am also a member of KCA (Kansas Counseling Association). In conjunction with that membership I belong to the school counselor subgroup and have district membership in regards to my location in the state. This membership allows me to participate in a great conference in March in which I get to network with other school counselors.

Do you find NASP more helpful than your state's organization (if your state has one)?

We do have a state organization. I never found it very useful in the past, but I haven't looked for a while. My previous state's organization was really lame. So I do find NASP more helpful, but to be honest, I don't do much with it. I do like the listserv thing (I think there is a forum on the site, but I basically get posts emailed, so it's more like a listserv in that way). I have learned a lot.

I can see that. But then no one used the private group for over a year When I asked if anyone was around, Editor PMed me to see if I thought a board would work. I was hoping it would bring in new people. Maybe it still will- we can't be the only three! I can understand wanting to be a little more private though. I assume we can always sign out on this board as well, but the fewer people regularly participating the easier it is to figure out who it would be, I guess?

When I was working as a school counselor, we had some great state groups that were really helpful and we had yearly meetings in one location. That state had almost nothing for school psychs! Of course, there were way more school counselors.
