ADHD for a teacher

Hi

I know this is probably a page more for mental health issues for students, but I feel like perhaps you have advice for me too.

I am in my 8th year of teaching. I have moderate-severe ADHD as an adult. For the most part, medication helps a lot, but I struggle with a lot of things like organization, keeping track of my schedule, memory, etc. I've had lots of "tricks" that have helped me in the past.

This year I have a LOT of ADHD kids too. The hard part for me is managing so many kids with ADHD who, for the most part, have the same problems I do. I feel like I use up all of my mental focus stamina on them, and have none left for me.

Are there any resources specifically geared towards teachers with ADHD?

I'm also recovering from pneumonia, which I feel like is severely affecting my ability to "plow through" my ADHD difficulties. I'm exhausted. It's affecting my stress and anxiety levels. I can't sleep. I can't keep going like this - I'm already counting down the days til summer!

That's a great question! I wish I had some resources for teachers who actually have ADHD, but I can't think of any. It might be helpful to use resources for students with ADHD and see how the recommendations can apply to you as well?

You probably already have these resources, but just in case they help you or someone else:
https://chadd.org/for-educators/overview/ (check the links on the left)
https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/school-success.html
https://www.additudemag.com/teacher-i-need-your-help/ (lots of other resources on this website)

I also just found this blog post, which might be helpful for you? I only skimmed it:
https://www.weareteachers.com/teacher-with-adult-adhd/

I hope you're feeling better soon- I totally get the exhaustion and I am not recovering from pneumonia

I have ADHD and take Concerta 54mg. I too have organization issues as well as memory and blurting. It wasn't until I entered my phd program that it got really bad.
Boy, I do SO many things. I always listen to background music that is subliminal ADHD music during the day, I play it quietly under relaxing music.

I let the kiddos with ADHD know that I have it too, that they are not alone and that I understand.
Get yourself to the Dr about your sleeping issues. That is a huge part of ADHD, I take some mild sedatives (non-habit forming) to get to sleep. I've gone to therapy, hypnosis - which works really well for me, and most importantly, have been kind to me. Cut yourself some slack.
