Next year we will be using Fountas and Pinnell for guided reading. I teach kindergarten. Can you think of any materials I may need to order to support the program? Weíve asked for a materials list but havenít received any yet and classroom budgets are due on Friday. Thank you!

A separate table and 4-6 chairs. Horse shoe shape is ideal.

Books....lots and lots of leveled books.

Stuff you probably already have:

Magnetic letters
Alphabet charts
Whiteboards and markers

At the moment, that's all I can think of. It's been a few years since I taught kinders.

We don't have the whole program, but in intervention I use the F&P Benchmark Assessment System to determine the F&P level. I would imagine you would need/want that to help set up your groups and monitor growth.

Leveled Literacy Intervention is their intervention system, so if your school will be using LLI/F&P for intervention, you - or your reading people - will need the LLI kits. It is pretty easy by looking online to find what you need to run intervention groups with LLI.

We just of the leveling kits to use. Each teacher has a set. We have them for grade 1 and 2 as we have many readers reading above 2nd grade level in 1st, by Christmas.

We pull for small group reading based on students reading levels from the kits.

I highly recommend Jan Richardson's "The Next Step in Guided Reading" for support about what to teach each leveled group. Really dive into the book and utilize all the resources within it. Plus the videos provided with the book.

Make sure to do some word work were students build words like: at, cat, bat, mat, sat ask them to identify sounds that need to be changed to make the new words to hold them accountable and make them work harder for the answer than just saying, "take away the c and put b in the place". For higher levels pick 4-5 words with harder sounds patterns: high, sigh, sight, light, lighter. Changing on one sound at a time as they build them with magnet letters or on white boards.

Index cards ,mini baskets or buckets to level your books . Get pocket folders for each student . Itís a lot easier than file folders. A lot of scratch paper cut in small rectangles or squares . This makes it easier when working with small groups at a horseshoe table.
