So you had a bad day...

Clip to ScrapBook #1

It was my first day back to subbing, and things did not go so well. It was over welling the new procedures, cleaning, and wearing a mask (for more than 20 mins). It was nearing the end of the day. Every time I sub for this teacher I got to go home early because she had end of the day conference. I also found out she did not have her last period. I go up to the fount office.

Me: Hi, there, I competed all her art duties may I go home.
Secretory 1: *about to nod her head in yes*
Secretory 2: Oh no, what is some kids magically need to come to your classroom, and then well I will have to teach the class. So no...
Me: *I grab my bag to go back to the classroom*
-20 minutes later in classroom-
Principal: You know she has after school duty. You need to stay.

I could not take it, I was so worried about getting covid. I march up to fount desk. I was having a panic attack. I did not want to faint in a empty classroom. I got pulled in principal office with a council to help calm me down. Ended up going home, without doing after school duties.

At least you tried. I haven't even had the guts to try it.

Sorry your first day back sucked.

I used to hate when they pulled stuff like this. I had a school try and hit me with after school detention once, out of nowhere, right at the end of the day. One kid showed up to it over something fairly minor (he'd left his student ID card at home, so some blowhard thought it appropriate to make another working professional stay after work a half hour unpaid), so I just looked over his detention form, realized I didn't even have to sign anything, and sent him home early and left. When I arrived at the office, they didn't even ask about the detention; I don't even think they were aware of what had happened.

Every job I'm assigned has a specific start and end time. I'm more than willing to be flexible within those boundaries, but the moment you ask me to stay late for no extra pay is when I leave, sorry. If subbing paid better, I could afford for it to be the only job in my life; but since the pay's kinda trash, I have other stuff I have to do after subbing to not be completely screwed, and you've got me mistaken for someone else if you think I'm jeopardizing it to do unpaid overtime with 0 notice. I know for a fact that plenty of fulltime teachers allow themselves to be taken advantage of like this, and I have no idea why, but that doesn't mean I'm down to be screwed similarly. Really can't stand that whole "for the kids!" culture. You're a working professional. If they want you to stay late, they should pay you for your time and give notice like any other ####ing job would.

Sounds like a rotten day for sure.

Yep, it's certainly no picnic out there right now.

What concerns me most is with remote learning...

Parents are able to spy on our classes and criticize/micromanage our every move now.

Like we needed any more excuses for schools to ban us...

@nonunion

Had the same thing happen to me. Ironically, the dentist was already super anxiety provoking.
