Clip Chart in the Middle School?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Has anyone ever used a clip chart for behavior management in a middle school setting? I teach 6th grade math in 40 minute blocks and I see my students for 6 blocks a week.

1) Is 40 minutes enough time for the clip chart to work?

2) If not, could the clips be reset once a week rather than every day?

I just finished making a clip chart for my 8th grade math students today. We are planning on starting it tomorrow. I did make some changes though. It follows the exact same behavior flow chart for the grade level, but it is just a visual. It also makes them take accountability. Part of me is hoping that they feel it's too baby-ish and change their behaviors to avoid the chart. The other part of me hopes that the chart is the change maker and we can use the chart all year.

The top color is a "good parent contact"
Second is a "gotcha doing something good" on their school wide stamp card. They purchase things every two weeks with their gotchas.
Third is the green "ready to learn"
Fourth is a letter on their stamp card. The letters coordinate with what they need to work on, i.e. R stands for respect.
Fifth is a "bad parent contact."

Believe it or not the kids really work hard for you to call their parents to let them know they are doing good.

I also had the girls (and one guy) that has great handwriting make the signs for each color. I made the clips, because I avoid giving certain students sharpies.

I like the idea of having parent contact on both ends. While I have had good parent contact, it's not sometime I've ever had students work towards. I can definitely see it as something they would enjoy.

1) Do you plan on calling each time? Or maybe sending a note or postcard home?

2) Do you plan on resetting it to the middle every day?

By the way, did you decide on using this program in response to behaviors that are in your class now or behaviors you are trying to prevent in the future?

Here is a link that gives a good explanation of what the clip chart is all about. Plus it has a downloadable book at the bottom of the page that gives even more detail.

But, in short, it's a chart of colors that correspond with student behavior. Evey student's name is placed on a clothes pin and attached to the green section at the beginning of every day. When a student is behaving well, you (or the student) can move their clip up and if they are behaving poorly, the clip gets moved down. You can decide how to reward good behavior and what the consequences will be for poor behavior. The neat part is that no matter which direction the clip goes at first, it can always be changed the other way.

Red - Outstanding
Orange - Great Job
Yellow - Good Day
Green - Ready to Learn
Blue - Think about it
Purple - Teacher's Choice
Pink - Parent Contact
