I'm moving from 5th to 3rd. I will be teaching ONLY math. Just curious how long your math classes are? In 5th grade I taught 3 90 minute blocks but that included transition and a class bathroom break each block. Not sure what I will have this year. We go back Monday. I'm just trying to get some ideas when we start planning our team schedule.

Our district has a 60 min. block designated for math instruction and 15 min.for structured intervention. I seriously doubt that everyone follows this schedule to the tee in 2nd grade.

I barely had time to get through everything in 5th in a 90 minute block. Can't imagine a 40 minute block. I am sooo excited about starting back to school this year and my return to 3rd grade. I can hardly wait til Monday to get our specials/activity (music/pe/comp lab) schedule so my team teachers and I can make out are daily schedule!

Our classes in middle school (5-8) are 100 minutes each and 40 minutes for special classes. The grades are 40 min each, but since they are self-contained, they can teach any subject for any length of time. A friend of mine, who teaches 3rd, has Reading and Math for 90 minutes a piece.

And this includes calendar activities (gr. 1.) In the other schools in the district they get one period (45 minutes) but can do the routines for calendar at a separate time. I think we need at least 80 minutes to do a good job.

I know calendar is important for 1st graders, but I want to use my hour more efficiently. So, after we learn all the calendar routines, I will have a helper update the board for me, and we will only go over it together as a class on Fridays. I'll be switching, too, this year, so I'll have to invite my colleague to send in one of her students each morning during bell work to update the board, too, so it's not just one of my "homeroom" students doing it.

We are a 6-8 building and we have six 40 minute blocks during the week for academic subjects. "Exploratories" (gym, tech lab, art, music, etc.) have two or three 40 minute blocks during the week. I'll be the first to tell you that 40 minutes is definitely not enough time!! But in my old school we had 80 minute blocks every other day and was not the answer either. I would love even a little bit more time!

we have 3 teachers (Rdg and English, Math, SS/Sc/Spelling). 3rd graders changing classes 3 times a day is crazy!!!!! I have 90 minutes on paper but I actually on get about 70 per class. Our district was one of the lowest in our state in math scores so they wanted us to have 90 minutes but that just isn't happening with lunch, recess, and specials smack dab in the middle of our blocks.

Our school was able to get another 3rd grade teacher during the middle of the 1st week of school. So the 2nd week of school we went from 3 man teams to two man teams. So I now teach Math and Science. I get 90 minutes for Math and 45 minutes for Science give or take 10 minutes for transitions. I can tell you 2 classes instead of 3 in 3rd grade is going sooooooooo much better!!!!!
