5th grade Math Vocabulary

Need ideas for Math vocabulary. How do you teach it and do activities to make sure the students understand the words. One year we made flashcards for the vocabulary for each topic. Then the next year I had the students write the word and draw an example of that word. My Hispanic students really suffer with the vocabulary so need to get ideas what other teachers do for vocabulary in Math. Thanks for any ideas or suggestion.

Drill and kill, I know, but our whole school is tired of kids asking what "sum" means, when we know that it is taught, and taught, and taught.

So, each week we are adding math and language vocabulary to spelling tests. Maybe the kids will be so sick of having to define the words they will actually start remembering them.

I think it is helpful to have posters or pocket charts displaying math words. I also like to illustrate math words and display these pictures with the words. The other aspect that is important is to make sure you are using the math vocabulary when you teach. Ask what is the sum? Rather than what is the answer?

Our district was required to do a book study/professional development on Robert Marzano's Building Academic Vocabulary. It really is a great resource, with incredible results. I teach in a school that is ALL Title 1/ High Poverty, and we saw kids using these vocabulary words like never before. If you google the book you can find TONS of teacher resources and even PowerPoints that supplement the reading. The only draw back tends to be the time needed to truly implement every step. Good luck!
