Let's make a list of things to interactively model (IM) or use guided discovery (GD) with, but try not to list something someone else already listed. Sure will save us all some time when trying to do this independently for the beginning of the year!


1) Crayons (GD)
2) Legos (GD)
3) How to line up at the door (IM)
4) Snack time procedures (IM)
5) Chime/ Bell procedures (IM)

Shiva,

Have you taken RC 2? If not, then its fairly normal not to know the difference between the two. The way that I understand it to be is:

Interactive Modeling: there is only one set way to use something, there are expectations, and you state these logically without the children's input. You model the behaviors/expectations and then ask what the children noticed. Have a child model, what do you notice, now everyone does it.

Guided Discovery: You want the children to figure out how to use the materials in a creative way for learning. You ask them what it is called, what they could use it for to help them learn (then let that child demonstrate it for the group), and set a few expected behaviors to keep the materials clean and usable. Then you let the whole class explore the materials for a larger chunk of time. At the end they have a share or representation meeting on what they made.

finding a just right seat, if you don't assign work seats (IM)
sign in/sign out board (IM)
lunch count if you do it independently (IM)
most classroom jobs (IM)
quiet signals (IM)
cleaning up art centers (IM)
art materials in general (GD, but some IM too!)
snack time clean-up (IM)
dictionaries, "Quick Word" books (GD)

you really were articulate about explaining the difference btwn IM and GD. I'd like to stress that IM is great for modeling specific behaviors that you'd like to teach (asking someone to join in a game, declining an invitation to play or read for example). Both have some structured steps for introducing behaviors and materials. The attachment I've included lays out the steps for IM. I would encourage anyone new to using these 2 tools to follow the steps closely in the beginning. There is a reason for doing it the way RC lays out. Once you have the flow, you can feel free to tweek/shorten/adapt, but do stay true to the "formula" when you first get started.

You can google guided discovery once you get to the archieves at the RC site.
