Mystery Box

One thing I do year after year is a 100's mystery box. The kids need to put 100 things in a box, decorate it and write down three clues as to what is in the box. We then guess and they show us what is in it. I always tell them how fun it is when people are creative. They have a lot of fun and so do I. I also do measuring with unifix cubes. We try and guess what will be 1oo unifix cubes long or tall. Those are two things I do. Good luck let me know if you want more information on the boxes they are fun.

We normally do a 100 day fashion show. The students need to decorate an item of clothing (hat, t-shirt, paper bag vest, etc) with exactly 100 items on them. Then we have a fashion show with the other 2nd grades.
Do you have a parent letter that you send home with the mystery boxes? I like this idea!

I have them make a 100 day project at home. They need to use 100 of something. I've had pictures on poster board with 100 goldfish in a underwater scene, 100 paperclips strung together, 100 pennies, etc.

They usually love this! (well, those that actually do it, I am always surprised that some just never do)

100th day

On that day, I my centers usually relate to 100 day stuff--At Poetry center I have a 100 day poem with 100 words that the students read and illustrate for their poetry journals. At writing center, we work on a 100 day book (I can't remember where I got this idea)-- basically I split a paper in half--on one side it says "I can eat 100 _______ (they fill in the blank) on the other side it says "but I could never eat 100 _____!" The students fill it in and illustrate--I have others too like "I could put 100 ______in my desk but I could never put ______ in my desk!"
For word work I usually have a large piece of butcher paper and magazines and students cut out nouns and label them (we try to get 100 by the end of the day). First grade and K have a parade with their collection of 100 things so I try not to do the same things. Hope this helps!

I do bottles instead of boxes. I got the lesson plan from readwritethink.org. If you go to that site and do a search for 100th day, it comes up as a descriptive writing lesson. It has a parent letter, clue worksheet - everything you need.

more 100th day ideas

Forgot another idea....I got this 100th day book, I think from Scholastic, and there is a game where they roll dice and put that many pennies down, when they get 10 they trade for a dime, when they get 10 dimes they trade for a $1. They really liked that one.

I also found on PT last year an idea for using the 100 chart. partners roll the dice and color that many squares. whoever reaches 100 first wins. they liked that one too.

have fun!

Another idea

My class sets of goal of collecting 100 cans (or more) of food by the 100th day of school. On the 100th day we sort the cans and donate the items to the Lord's Cupboard. We usually end up going over our goal!
