I need to send notes to parents who's students will get a "below grade level" mark on the their report cards. The notes go home about a month in advance. I'm looking for one that is not too alarming, but encourage the parent to take some action at home. Does anyone have one? Thanks.

I've been there and you're right it is a balancing act. You want to be direct and honest but soften it a little bit. I usually say something positive like... Although Tommy is making progress with his reading, he is not yet reading on grade level. or Johnny and I have been working on strengthening math concepts, but he is not meeting grade level expectations at this time. Then discuss what you are doing and what support at home is needed. i.e- Please be sure Tommy is reading every evening at home. This additional support is essential.

Good luck
