Through a grant, we received 8 ipads to share in first grade. Can you direct me to some recommended apps? Can you share successes and struggles? What profects have you done? Thanks much!

App ideas

I love to go to smart apps for kids dot com. I've got lots of app ideas from there. They offer one app a day for free and they review apps as well.

I've used my iPads for all sorts of things. There's apps such as Sock Puppets or Toontastic where kids can make up their own stories using digital characters. They can record their story on these apps. I've used Quick Voice to record students reading and let them hear themselves. I've used the camera on the iPad to record parent volunteers reading stories. Then students can go back and listen and read the book with the recording.

I have book apps such as the I Like books by Grasshoper that I got for free. Kids can listen to the book then read the book. There are apps for sight words, phonics, grammar, etc. I like Touch and Write by Fizzbrain for practicing writing sight words.

I love all the math apps. I hook up my iPad to my projector so I can teach my entire class how to play the app plus learn the concept the app teaches.

There are some apps that are like board games so that more than one student can be on the iPad at once. Futabo is one of those games as well as Math Slide.

Enjoy!

Some of our favorite paid apps are: pocket phonics (handwriting and phonics) spelling 1-2 (you can put in your own spelling list, spash math, sushi monster and apps gone free for apps that are free for a limited amount of time.
