I'm going to start my writing workshop time with 10 minutes of silent work. Should that be considered by RC quiet time, or should that be a time when they have some choice as to what they should do?

Technically, QT occurs after lunch as a break in the day and to get ready for the afternoon. You would teach specific choices/behaviors/expectations for this time. It is a time for your students to dream, relax, think, recharge...not a work time.

I am brand new to responsive classroom this year, having taken the inservice this summer. Only one from my school. Anyway, the Quiet time portion of RC, is one of the most received (as well as other parts) from my students. It is after lunch before our academics for the afternoon begin. I actually forgot one day...had a lesson I needed to start...and the kids cried out...don't we have quiet time? Oh yes, right!
Right now...my choices are READING...library books in desks, books from 4 bins, or their just-right books; or WRITNG of their choice topics in their journals; or activities of their choice in their red school folder! They know it has to be absolutely quiet...and they look forward to it!

There's a lot to remember, you are right.

So be kind to yourself! You have this Board and so many other resources.

Breathe in...breathe out...
and most of all, enjoy your kiddos!
