So tired of hearing this excuse from other special ed teachers.

Finally stood up for myself and said "so?" to a teacher who wanted to put a student in my more restrictive environment of a classroom because student did not fit in established groups.

I understand that teachers feelings, but IME all teachers have that one kid and you do the best you can.

Administration actually backed me up on that, so yeah, small victories.

It's called differentiation, even in sped. I've run into the same issues.

YES! I have come up against this in the past and it makes me furious! Fortunately, now we do grade level bands (I have K-5) so there is none of this right now (resource rooms in my building).

Special Ed. IS ALL ABOUT differentiation. We are the (or should be!!) the experts at differentiation!!

Sorry you had to endure that, but so happy that admin backed you!

I hate when they do that. I've seen sped teachers give have the para basically teach that one student who does not fit into any group. Yes, I know it's hard to have that one student so far ahead or behind the rest of the group, but you have to make it work.

For the past 2 years, I have had a student put in my room that had been staffed in gen ed with IEP goals by ?. I really don't know who placed them in my room - if it was gen ed teachers, grade level sped teachers or admin. Typically when students are placed in my classroom it's a district decision since my students may be from other schools, but for the past 2 years I have been given students who were initially placed in a gen ed classroom but them I'm told they are coming to me - not fair for the child in my opinion!
