I had 11 new kids qualify this month, so I’m having to tweak my schedule. I’m just curious to know how many are in your largest group. I’m trying to make everyone happy!

Currently my biggest group is 7. We follow the ESSA rule that allows interventionists to meet IEP minutes, and we do everything in intervention blocks. This allows my groups to stay somewhat under control. Of course the flip side of that is that I also have to take gen ed kids in my group.

Back when I only saw kids with IEPs, it varied widely just depending on the needs in that grade level. Sometimes by dumb luck it would end up that I'd only have 2-3 students in a group, but on the other hand in some grade levels I would literally have like 13 kids. That's not "small group" instruction!

With the way we do things now, I never get to do those really tiny groups anymore but I also never end up with an absurd amount in one group either. I've heard that tier 3 is really supposed be 1-3 kids, but IME that rarely happens in practice for kids that already have IEPs. Some schools will do that pre-referral to prove the kid needs an IEP, and then move them right on over to a much bigger group once they're in sped (my school used to do this).

I've been lucky to be able to keep groups at 4 or less kids....

The small group idea is where Iím running into a road block. If I slide the new qualifiers in with their grade level time that I already have, Iíll have 10 in one group and 7 in another.
