What is this? I have a student who will be mainstreamed into my classroom next year (1st grade) and I would like to know how to support their learning. BTW, the child is not deaf nor blind. Qualified because of speech.
Thanks

In my state, low incidence means that it is one of the less common disabilities (for example, a learning disability, etc. is considered high incidence). I am sure that this varies from state to state. This could be one of a HUGE variety of things- I teach in a low incidence classroom and I have students with various cognitive disabilities as well as emotional/ behavioral disabilities. Are you sure that the only disability is a speech/ language disorder? In my district, those students with strictly a speech IEP are not classified under the low incidence label. I would recommend starting by meeting with the speech pathologist who services the student and finding out more about the specific disability.

I would think that low incidence could be multiple disablities such as physically impaired and cognitively delayed. Or a severe cognitive delay such as an IQ of 50 or less. At least that's what low incidence is in my district. Good Luck.
