What things should I include in back-to-school packets for parents (with children in special education)? I've looked online for resources, but all I seem to find are packets for the general classroom. Also the school year begins mid-August... when is an appropriate time to send them out?

I've just been hired as a 2nd grade special education teacher and want to reach out to the parents before the school year begins. Any suggestions/ideas for a first-year teacher? Thank you!

I would think about sending a simple letter or postcard introducing yourself at the end of July or beginning of August. Mention how excited you are, how you could be reached with beginning of the year questions, and tell a little bit about yourself.

I call my parents to say hello within the first month of school, and am in fairly regular contact there after. I think a call is better for first contact because it gives you a chance to ask about each child's interests and triggers, and address any concerns parents might have. I will have an interpreter call if the parents don't speak English to relate how happy I am to have the student back. (There's a teacher in my school who speaks about 4 Asian languages.) Find out if your school already sends out letters. Mine sends welcome letters and information about school policies and supply lists. I send out my own letter after school begins.

Because our intermediate school "loops" with our students, I only get a new group every other year. In the past I have mailed postcards. Many of our families live elsewhere during the summer, so phone calls are not usually productive.

Our school hosts a "Back to School" event after the second day of school. This 2 hr event is held in the evening so that parents may attend. My team usually presents a 15 min powerpoint- teacher introductions, school policies, and team requirements. After the presentation I invite parents back to my room. I provide them with a copy of the "First Day" packet that I gave to students. I teach 6th/7th grade so most of it probably wouldn't be appropriate for 2nd grade, but you could create something that lists your expectations for class, homework, etc. I make sure to list my phone number and email address, as well as verify parent/guardian contact information.

Thank-you everyone for the wonderful advice! I will definetly use this information as I prepare my back-to-school packets. This is so very helpful to be able to reach out to all of you.

SDT - My main responsibility will be co-teaching with the 2nd grade general education teacher, but I will have a few pull-out groups. I need to collaberate with her to discuss this issue, because I definetly don't want to step on her feet as I am sure that she has already prepared/sent out her packets. Also - I do not want to send out similar copies for parents and students. I don't want them to have to fill out the same information twice, but I too want to reach out to them.

As far as exceptionalities go - I am a Level 1 Special Education teacher, so my students are mild LD who are mainstreamed into general education.
