Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have a really tricky kiddo. He has a history of violence against teachers. He is new to me but not to my district. He was removed from his house and lives in a group home. He is currently on a shortened schedule. I think it is working well. I have a meeting with his family and group home on Friday. I am concerned that they may push for him to come all day. I am not sure how to advocate for keeping the current schedule without sounding like I am against their kid. Any advice?

If they want to extend his day, what about a compromise? To ensure that you donít loose the progress he has made (emphasize this!), extend his day by 30 minutes for the next 2 weeks/month/whatever. Monitor and build up toward staying the whole day by adding time in 30 minute increments over the next several months. At any point that behaviors escalate, drop back to the last successful level. Would something like that work?

recent?

If so, use that as a reason, "With all the recent changes to his home situation, I feel he would benefit from stability and consistency with his school situation."

If it is not a recent change, they (the Home) may be pushing it to get all of the school-aged kids on the same schedule. In that case, they are thinking of what is best for the home and not what is best for the child.
