Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone!

I was just hired as a 4th grade teacher!!! I'm super excited but very nervous. I did my student teaching in 2nd and 8th grade, so i'm a little nervous about the new grade.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me that me as a newbie would not know! Like what management techniques work best? Classroom Decor (I have nothing, shopping advice)? How to establish routines well (do i have to be a drill sargent until they get the procedures?) Ect.. Maybe theres a book I can read over the summer? I want to be a good teacher!!

Thanks in advice for the suggestions!!
-Danielle

Good Morning, and...

CONGRATULATIONS! You will love 4th graders! I've been in the 4th grade classroom for 14 years now, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

I don't have a lot of time right now, but I will come back and post more later. You'll really need to get the "First Days of School" book by H. Wong. It's full of great ideas, for starters.

But, in a nutshell.....You are very lucky! 4th graders are young enough to still want to please their teacher. (Seems 5th graders want to please their friends!) They are able to work independently, can be great thinkers, get your "jokes", and love to have fun!

Congratulations!!

I just moved to fourth grade too. After teaching in 6th, I went down to 1st and now I'm back up in the intermediate grades. You'll love the intermediate grades. I'm looking for a lot of good ideas too, so maybe we can keep eachother updated.

4th grade is fun because kids are still kids, they still want to make everything about the teacher. I taught 6th as well, and I love the innocence of 4th graders.

As far as management, I use a kind of time out system. Read setting limits in the classroom by McKenzie and Rick Morris' 8 great ideas. (www.newmanagement.com)

Carpet time....sometimes....it depends on your time. 4th graders will do it, especially in the beginning of the year. Classroom jobs...yes absolutely. I like to have a job for every kiddo. Email me if you would like with questions...

I teach all minilessons from the carpet. Students have clipboards and mini whiteboards. I try to make sure they're not sitting too long and give lots of movement time when needed.

Jobs are key to establishing that whole community "we're in this together" feeling and they can absolutely do everything to keep the room flowing !

As far as decorating, I keep it simple.

Choose a few colors that you like and stick to them for the walls. I have basic blue butcher or light green paper up on every BB. I used plain black border and it looks pretty slick. When I make a sign, I use a cool font and print it out. I then use colored construction paper behind that, and black behind that. Or maybe black, then a colored piece. It looks good. My basic colors this year were blue, green, yellow and orange.

I'll post a picture of one of my bb's. (My class this year is a 3/4)

Wow! Seeing your classroom really helps me see what i need to buy. Can anyone else show me some of your classroom pictures? I heard that creating a theme for your classroom is fun but it seems like it would be alot of work. Has anyone done this? If i do theme my classroom I think I want to do under the sea!

What do you teach and where do you teach? Your classroom is huge! Also, the view out of your window is beautiful!

You should check out Beth Newingham's site. She has wonderful ideas that you could download and also great pictures to get an idea of bulletin board scene.

We use a school wide behavior management technique using the card system.

I also have a carpet in my classroom where I teach mini lessons, morning meeting, or where the students read during independent reading time.

Fourth grade is a wonderful. Like they all said, they are still young enough to want to please the teacher but yet old enough to do a lot of independent works as well. The best of both worlds!
