What are some picture books you use to teach prediction?

There's a great scholastic book called Comprehension Cliffhangers. The actual reading level is hard for many 4th graders, but I read the short stories aloud while the students follow along. The stories are cut off before the surprise ending. The students have to predict and infer how they think the story will end before they read it. My kids cheer for them! We just did one today.

Grandfather's Journey..which is a picture book and in the Houghton Mifflin basal reader.....
you have students look at the pictures to write their predictions.....
we teach prediction at our school with this story at the beginning of the year.

Are you in Georgia by chance? If so, the United Streaming site from GPB has a video for teachers on predicting. It's more of a professional development video and it's older, yet has good ideas for predicting in Science & SS. Key word: "predicting" The video is based on the Directed Reading Thinking Activity.

A great book for prediction, since the words help in the predictions while the illustrations help in the delivery (and the humor).

Books for Prediction

The book Peanut is great.... read the book to students (grades k-4).... do not show the illustrations or cover of the book... at end of the story have a class discusion and ask them what they predict the "best friend" looks like, how they act,,, do they predict they would want this peron for their best friend?? If you have the time, you could even have the students draw a picture of what they think the friend looks like.... Then read the book, showing the cover and all illustrations.... I bet your students will be surprised!

If your school library does not have the book Peanut, then the same activity could be done with Emma and Kate....

have fun....predicting can be a blast....
