Has anyone used this book by Cynthia Rylant? It's about a homeless family that lives in the airport. I just wondered what your take on it was. It was recommended in RWM.

Last year, we had a lunch book club for our higher readers and we used it. I didn't lead that particular meeting, but we did have a parent complaint about it. They felt that it was too much for first grade.

I don't know what I think... honestly, the only reason we had a complaint was because we sent it home for book club discussion, but if they knew the other books we read for Reader's Workshop, they probably wouldn't like those either. RWM suggests a lot of really deep books. I try to consider the make up of my class when choosing.

I think the book you are referring to is by Eve Bunting. I used it both in second and fourth- sad; but I think it helps build tolerance of others.

I used this book with my second graders when we were working questioning. I love this book and so did my students. They started out thinking it was about a boy and his father taking a trip (looking at the cover) but realized very quickly that it wasn't. They had so many questions before, during, and after, that it took us two days to get through the book. I think next year I will use it for synthesizing...not sure yet, but I will definitely use it.

I can see that it may be a bit much in younger grades. I know teachers who use it to go along with 5th/6th grade novels about homelessness (Maniac McGee, Esperanza Rizing, etc.)

I also teach 2nd grade and I used this book during my questioning and inferring (They wanted to know what happened to the mother) units. My students asked wonderful questions before, during and after reading the book. It also took me 2 days to get through the book. I have used it for the past 2 years and the kids seem to really learn something from the book. My suggestion is to think about your students and see if they are ready for that type of text.
