RW or Daily 5

I teach 1st grade and am trying to decide between the Reader's Workshop and the Daily 5. Does anyone have words of wisdom or helpful insight into this question. Am I the only one who has struggled to decide which to use in my classroom? Thanks!

I have been thinking the same thing! I have read Reading with Meaning and Comprehension Connections this summer along with Daily 5 and CAFE. I think I am leaning towards the RW though - I absolutely see the benefits of providing the kids authentic time to practice what you've been teaching them. And...I thought it might push me a little too as a teacher. I've always taught using centers - just not the specific Daily 5 - so doing Daily 5 doesn't really seem much different to me. I am hoping RW might help me grow and really discover who I am as a reader and how I can better help my class. Not completely decided yet though!

RW or D5?

I have done RW for a couple of years and absolutely love it. I am struggling with incorporating the Daily 5, and I'm not quite sure how to do it.

Last year I did RW T,W,Th. On Mondays and Fridays I held Words Their Way groups, and the children did Daily 5. (Or my version of it, at least.)

I went to a Beverly Tyner conference this summer, and she recommends doing your spelling/word study groups at the same time as guided reading groups, which makes sense to me.

I saw another poster on this board say that she did a combination of the two. I believe she said that she did independent reading for the first part (I imagine 20-30 minutes), and then let the children make Daily 5 choices for the rest of the time (probably another 20-30 minutes). I am not sure though.

Can anyone add anything or clarify?

Just wondering how Beverly Tyner recommends doing both at the same time? What if kids are on one level for reading and another for spelling?

I had the same question as you. She says to do word study the first few minutes of every reading group, with phonics/phonemic awareness activities. She says to put them in the group according to reading level and phonics will come.

I don't know how I would make this work. I think I'll stick to my system.

So what does she recommend to do for word work? I am very curious about this. I have always wanted to so word work with guided reading but have also struggled b/c of the different levels.

Funny note: I was just discussing this with my next door neighbor last night who happens to dislike WordStudy.

Word Work

I believe she recommends doing word work as part of the reader's workshop part. She uses phonics tiles to build words, different word sorts, word searches for patterns in magazines, etc. She also uses---and I'm going out on a limb here because I can't remember the name---boxes with three and four sections. Each box represents a sound, not a letter. So CAT would be C - A - T. Each letter fitting in box. THAT would be TH - A - T. Each sound having a box. She really doesn't say anything brand new, just brings it all together in a manageable way. Like anything else, I don't think you can ditch your old system, but integrate new things in slowly.

Did this help at all?

If you make any written plans to share RW/Daily 5/Cafe, I would really appreciate it! I am trying to combine all three and need the first 25 days. Thanks! Nanny

I tried to do the Daily 5 and Cafe with my 1st graders. They were...bored. In Kinder, they go to centers and so in first that was a big change. I had a literacy specialist from the district come in to work with them on their stamina. I really wanted D5 to work, but literacy workstations are what seems to keep them quieter and ontask. This year I am working on merging the two, with more work on words stations
