Clip to ScrapBook #1

I finally purchased Debbie Miller's book and am wondering is it a book I should read from the begining or can I just look through it and find where I would be at right now? My kids our getting really good at making images in their minds but I don't want to lose out on any important messages she might suggest. I will of course read it from the begining I just mean for right now since it is so far into the year. Also another book "Strategies..." I cannot remember the title that everyone seems to refer to as being a great resource. What is the title and who is the author. Thanks, ElsaMiquell

If it's an emergency, I guess you could skip to where you are, but you might have difficulty understanding how they got there. I guess skip, and then if you have time, read a little each night up through the beginning. It reads like a novel-- it is so well-written that it's the kind of book you can't put down and don't mind reading.

The other book you are probably referring to is: Strategies that Work by Stephanie Harvey. It's really a little more geared towards upper elem. but you might find it helpful anyways. If you needed more activities, you could reference it.

Which one should I read first? I already read RWM and am ready to read it through again also! How many hours are there in a day for teachers? Lately, I'm needing more than my 24.

MOT was recommended to me as a first read. I'm so very happy about it too! Either way, you get a lot out of both books. Happy Reading!

I'm half way through with MOT and just love it! The references to Debbie Miller's classroom are helping to solidify the concepts of reader's workshop more and more. I wish there were some pictures of the many charts mentioned. My copy of GR should be here on Friday and that will be next.

I posted this question on another board but didn't get a whole lot of response.

I am VERY interested in doing Reader's Workshop next year! Which book should I read first? I have gotten so many book titles from everyones' post but am not really sure where to start. By the way, I teach 2nd grade.

I am a 2nd grade teacher and the two books I think that I have gotten the most out of are Reading with Meaning and Growing Readers. They are both pretty easy reads and great resources to keep going back to.

...start with Growing Reader's first - that will give you the nuts and bolts of Reader's Workshop...then delve into Debbie Miller/RWM. I use them in that order in my classroom as well. GR for the first several months and then RWM for the rest of the school year!

Thanks! That really helps. I'm on a TIGHT budget and can only afford one book right now. So I will get the Growing Readers first. And the by the end of school, I should be able to get Reading with Meaning! Thanks for your help!!

Have you checked your school's professional library? I found a copy there until I bought my own.
