Science? (That is, if you are able to jump around in your science book)! I am new to 4th and am interested as to why you would choose a certain chapter to teach in certain months. Thanks for your input.

We don't actually have a textbook but I've planned out the year for some particular reasons. Here are a few ideas:

Early fall/first unit: Matter just because it lays the foundation for many skills used throughout the year (experiments, hands on activities, vocabulary) AND because it is very hands on and motivating to kids!

Late fall: Plants because we have a great outdoor science lab to observe and do bark and leaf rubbings, why leaves change colors

Winter: Weather because we can track extreme weather conditions and record lots of data

Spring: Earth's Changes (erosion, etc.) back to the outdoor lab to observe the stream bank and evidence of erosion

I'm going to start with 'I wonder' booklets and the scientific method. This will form a good base for our inquiry units based on the curriculum outcomes.

I begin our year off teaching the scientific method which is not specifically spelled out in our text but it lays the foundation for many experiments that come throughout the year.
We then proceed to:
Life Science
Earth Science and then
Physical Science

We start with physical science - matter
Life science, earth science, then weather.

Do you have a pacing guide?

In our county we have to follow a pacing guide so we are all teaching the same thing at the same time in case kids move from one school to another during the year they will not miss anything! Check to see if you have a pacing guide to go by.
