Does anyone out there have a letter to parents explaining the 40 book challenge? I wanted to write one, but I thought I'd see what was already out there. Why reinvent the wheel?

I am interested in knowing what the 40 book challenge is? Could you tell me more about it? Thanks!

is an idea from a book called The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. It is a fantastic read about rethinking how we teach reading to students. It uses the reading workshop approach. I highly recommend the book. Hope this helps!

I would also like to see what others have used. Might I suggest you post your question in the Book Whisperer group. ( Unless you already have)

Just a thought...

I did the book challenge last year with my 4th graders for the first time and decided to do the 20 book challenge with them rather than 40 because I knew Donalyn has a 40 book challenge with 6th grades and up. Every child in my class made their 20 book goal but it was rough for some. Even so, I'm doing a 30 book challenege this year and then when they get to 5th grade they will "graduate" to the 40 book challenege. Even though I wish it weren't true I knew that the class coming to me simply was not used to the volume of reading I expected of them so I modified it a bit. Like I said, just a thought. Good luck!

Hi Bolend- the Book Whisperer Group, as well as many others are found on the groups list on the right side of the rooms on the home screen. If you don't see it, click "more".

I attached what I made for the 40 book challenge. I took some ideas from Christina Bainbridge's site and some from Laura Candler's site and then made it my own.

FYI- this is my first time teaching 4th after years in first and second.

I have been reading the Book Whisperer, The Daily 5, The Cafe, and Igniting a passion for reading. I have also been following the groups that are talking about these books. I love this site! I never feel alone. I am going to try to jump right in this fall. We have permission from the principal to do away with using the traditional reading text. I am excited but nervous as well. I like the 40 book challenge but wonder if it isn't too much...I don't think I ever read 40 books in a year, although this summer I think I read at least 10:>)

My fifth grade class took the 40 Book Challenge this year. At the end, I found the average and it equaled 38.4 books each! One boy said he had never read more than 30 pages in a book but this year finished 34 entire books. Almost all the reading was done in school, but it was the only "extra" activity allowed. The students made such great gains in comprehension, stamina, and an overall love of reading.
