I'm a new teacher, and we are having back to school this week. Am I supposed to distribute anything? Do I just meet everyone and talk about the class, or should I give a welcome letter? I was planning on giving welcome letter to evryone first day. I'm not sure what I am expected to do.

Thanks!

You principal should give you some guidance. At staff meetings, we always told to give out our syllabus which was to include our classroom management policy.

Do you have a mentor teacher of some kind? If not, you can also talk to your grade level colleagues.

Different schools expect different things. My school is huge on giving out multiple methods of contact. The class overview is not expected, as it is sent home on the first day. Our open house is really just a PR thing: be nice, let parents know you are not a monster, etc.

I agree that it varies by school. I did give a folder with my intro letter on one side, and all the forms to be signed on the other side. That way, parents had more time to complete them and give them back.

Ours was more of a "Meet the Teacher" type of event, so I just let them look around the room, find their desk, and then see me before they left. I had a clipboard where I could jot down any information the parents said (that they don't write on the info form). You'd think you could remember it, but I don't!

Enjoy your first year!

you should ask someone at your school what the format is.

ours is 1.5 hours. first half hour is in classrooms. the next half hour, the principal addresses all the parents while we recover. the last half hour we do our shpiel again (for parents who have two or more kids at the school).

my PPT covers EVERYTHING. it contains loads of specific details so i can just hand the handouts to those who didn't come and they still get all the info.

the basics of what's in my PPT:
--my education, experience, family
--curriculum for the year
--my goals for the year
--behavior management (pos/neg consequences)
--schoolwide programs
--this year we've changed up our grading and our report card, so i'll share a bit about that
--any needs like volunteers and materials
--field trips (big ones parents might want to take days off for)

i think that's mostly it...

--i will also solicit for our Silent Auction Basket and our decorated pop bottles for our Pop Walk at Carnival

and leave some time for questions...

good luck!

Yes, depends on culture of school.

I always handed out a short packet that explained how I teach, my behavior system, basic classroom rules, my pet peeves, the report card, and sign up sheets for whatever was needed.

I also used chart paper for conference sign ups. Do it now and you'll have less headaches later.

Everyone has given you excellent advice and suggestions!

You'll probably have about 12-15 minutes with each group of parents, I'm guessing, so keep it brief, informal, friendly, and positive. Tia gave you great advice as to what are good topics to review. Go over behavior and consequences carefully. Hold your expectations for behavior as high as academic accomplishments.

Have parents sign in on a sheet as they enter the room. Sometimes it's good to provide snacks if folks are coming from work.

Some folks may ask how their child is doing. After only a week or so of school, I always find this question amusing if not absurd. You might think of a clever response to this question, as it invariably comes up by someone.

I always like meeting parents. Don't worry. You'll have a great night!
