NYS 4th grade teachers

I read in the newspaper yesterday that the NYS ELA and Math Assessments will now be given in May to accurately reflect a full year of learning.

I am excited about this as our curriculum will be less "choppy," especially in math where we had to concern ourselves with the pre-March, post-March curriculum.

Your thoughts?

Hi Disneynut
Which paper did you read it in?? I also teach in NY and would love to read the article. This will certainly change my lesson plans for the coming school year. TIA

May tests

I also read this (from what I understand the Board of Regents just decided on this and no really expected them to do it, at least this quickly).

I have mixed feelings -- I love the idea of more time to teach and less choppiness, but I'm not sure what May is going to look like. Six days of testing is a lot to ask of the kids and then somehow, all the tests have to get scored. That adds up to a REALLY busy month. I'm curious what the schedule will look like.

I'm not finding anything on the dept of ed or any other sites confirming the change in date. Where did you read this?

I read this in the Saturday morning edition of the Buffalo News. We were doing math curriculum mapping today and the admin in charge confirmed the change. No specific dates in May have been decided upon.

I'll be really interested to see how they are going to grade such a lengthy test by the end of the year. I graded it a few years ago and it took forever with at least 100 people each of two rooms...and that was just the ELA, not the math! I'm in NYC and I can't imagine them getting them scored and the grades to us in time for the end of the year. Maybe they're planning on shortening the test, as well? I heard rumors about them taking out the written answer part of the Math.

I hope they make an official announcement soon so I can really start planning for it!

ETA:: I just heard from another teacher at my school that the date did in fact change to May. That's great news! I'll be able to teach them the skills needed to pass the test instead of just test prep them for it in a short amount of time! YAY!

We just recieved this email from the state through my superintendent. I teach on LI. Yes--both Math and ELA will be given in May. No dates have been set as of yet. Science still has that one month wondow chosen by districts. We give our assessment in the end of April typically. Thinking that might change now due to other testing in May.

I am THRILLED not to have Pre-march/Post March any longer! I can really teach my curriculum now rather than squeeze it in for the test! I wish they would have given ELA in mid-March, but I guess that would defeat their weather related reasoning for moving the tests.

New Test Dates

These are old. New 1009-1010 dates are (off the top o my head)
Grade 3 - 8 ELA April 26- 28 (Make ups the next week)
Grades 3 - 8 Math May 5-8 (Make ups just afterward)
Science 4 and 8 Grade - June 3 (Practicum) and June 7 or 8 Written

It is going to be an intense month or so for 4th graders. I work with special ed, and it may be too much by the Science exams.
