What do I need to purchase for RW/WW?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am starting RW/WW for 2nd grade and I am a bit confused on what I will need to buy before the 1st day of school.

For RW... I will buy journals for the kids to record responses, heaps of post it notes, individual books bags/boxes, lots of chart paper and markers for me.

For WW...I will buy writing folders, pencils (obviously), and...I'm not sure what else I need!

Are your writing folders just 2 pocket folders?

What kind of paper do you distribute to the kids to write on?

Thanks

What grade do you teach?

For the younger grades, I use paper that has a picture box at the top so they can sketch first and then lines (the number of lines depends on the age) for the writing.

I use 2 pocket folders.

For WW, you will also want chart paper to model stories and post anchor charts. You will also need mentor texts (literature that demonstrates qualities of writing you want your students to begin to use).

I teach 2nd grade.

I plan to use my school library for the mentor texts or buy books as I need them.

Where do you get the paper with the illustration box? Do you download it and make copies or do you buy it?

Paper...

I would recommend using paper instead of composition books for 2nd grade. Like the pp, I also use lined paper with a picture box at the top and my students keep their work in a two pocket folder. I teach them to sketch their pictures first (to plan) and write words second.

I make and copy this paper myself, though I'm sure there is probably paper out there like this to buy as well. I like to make it myself because then I can have many different choices for my kids. For example, I'll have some paper that's landscape oriented and some that's portrait oriented and I'll have some with lots of lines and some with just a few lines for writing.

They actually have a list on the Teacher's College Reading/Writing Project Website. Here's the link:
http://rwproject.tc.columbia.edu/pro...ook-lists.html

Here are some favorites for Small Moments:
Shortcut by Donald Crews
Big Mama's by Donald Crews
Roxaboxen by Alice Mclerren
Paperboy by Dav Pilkey
Whistling by Elizabeth Partridge
Peterís Chair by Ezra Jack Keats
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Fireflies! By Julie Brinckloe
Salt Hands by Jane Chelsea Aragon
Come on Rain by Karen Hesse
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

I also make my own 5-page booklets for Small Moments unit. If you would like a copy, PM me. I can't attach yet : )
