I have 45 minutes each day to teach reading....any suggestions as how to use Readers Workshop in 45 minutes? I teach first grade and most of my kids are reading on a late first grade to middle second grade level.

You don't say if you are familiar with the reading workshop philosophy or if you have read any of the usual books like Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning or Kathy Collins Growing Readers.
Have your students had any experience with RW previously (ie in kindergarten)?
If you are familiar with the above and you only have 45 minutes, you can still fit in a mini lesson and workshop time by following the lessons that many of us here on PT follow.
What's critical when you have so little time is that students are well "trained" in the expectations of Reading Workshop. Then you aren't wasting time dealing with behavior problems. I always use the Daily Five for guidelines as to how I conduct my workshop.

Let me know how else I can help you!

I've read Reading with Meaning, Daily 5, but not Growing Readers. I think my biggest stumbling block is going from 90 min. to 45. I feel like I get started and it's time to go! Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction!

My biggest problem is keeping my workshops tight. I tend to let certain parts go on too long (i.e the mini lesson). I know some people use a timer and don't go past the time set.
Since you only have that 45 minutes you will have to make every minute count.
But as we say, better some than none!

I find it incredible that your curriculum only allows for such a short amount of time for such a deep subject! Good luck making it work!
