Does anyone have any ideas for what to do for a 4th grade fluency station/center during a literacy block? Right now I have them read to a partner or time themselves.

Thanks!

I also have the kids time themselves and graph it, but I use a lot of poetry for the kids to either read to themselves or a buddy.

You could improve fluency by having a readers theater station with short, two or three part plays.

If you search FCRR you will find the Florida Center for Reading Research. On it, they have Student Center Activites for different grades, broken down into reading areas. There is a section on Fluency. I do readers theatre, poems, buddy read, and activities from this site.

Fluency centers at this age can also include books on CD or iPod, as a listening center, as long as copies of the paper or hardback book are provided. You could also include plays, partner poetry, a tech station with a laptop, headphones, etc. and task cards for recording student voices as they read a selection with expression.

Students can work in pairs while working on Frye's phrases. I copied them on cardstock, laminated, and cut into strips. Also, students can listen to stories on CD. We use Treasures and they came with leveled listening CDs that correlate to the week's story. There are also poems to practice as well as Reader's Theater that I try to go along with Science and/or S.Studies. Another post mentioned fcrr.org.....fantastic website!!

I made fluency graphs and bound them in a comb book for each student. They will read the passage with a friend and time each other during one of our stations as a "cold read" and then graph their wpm.

then on fridays I will test them each myself while they take their weekly assessment and they will graph again and compare!

i will attach a sample of the graphs I made...hope this helps
